Last weekend we camped at the beach, just a few meters from the Caribbean sea ...
This is Tulum, a small town in the Riviera Maya, one hour south from Cancun. It is a secluded area best known for the fabulous preserved beaches and the world class scuba diving. There are also hundreds of Cenotes, these natural fresh water sinkholes in the middle of the jungle.
We camped at Camping Chavez, saving at least $100 per night compared to the other 'cheap' lodging options - mostly cabanas.
Camping Chavez was a very nice place to stay. The staff is kind and helpful, good people with big heart. You can bring your own tent and camp at the beach for $10 per night. Or you can sleep in a teepee with proper bed for a bit more. There are nice showers and fully equipped shared kitchen.
The weather in Tulum is always amazing: humid, warm and with cool breeze from the sea.
There are 3 popular activities you can do in Tulum:
1. Scuba Diving In Coral Reefs And Cenotes
Tulum is right by the Great Mayan Reef, the second longest coral reef in the world.
In addition, there are Cenotes - these natural fresh water sinkholes formed from limestone bedrock. Cenotes were a critical source of fresh water for ancient Mayas and ancient cities like Tulum are steps away from these cenotes.
We recommend Dos Ojos Cenote and Sac Actun Cenote. Casa Cenote and Grand Cenote are great too. The best way to explore these natural wonders is scuba diving. We dived with Victor from Koox Diving and had an amazing experience.
2. Visit the Mayan ruins - and climb!
Go to the Tulum ruins, explore them and then go down to the beach. Great climbing awaits!
Make it quick before the crowds start to gather. It feels great to climb this sharp limestone rock right by the Caribbean sea.
3. Enjoy the beach and the sunrise over the sea
Watching the sunrise is always uplifting, specially by the ocean with all those colors.
Just follow these 3 easy steps:
1: Set your alarm 10 minutes before sunrise.
2: Walk 10 meters to the beach (from your tent).
3: Relax and enjoy.
So next time you are planning a 3-day holiday trip, consider going to Tulum and enjoy its wonders. You will love it!
