Red River Gorge is a special geological area in the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky. It's best known for its superb sandstone walls that attract many rock climbers and hikers all over North America.
Last weekend we visited this area to celebrate Mon's 30th birthday hiking, climbing and enjoying the fall colors in the mountains :) It's a place you should visit at least once if you live in the East and like to climb and hike. There are hundreds of climbing routes to be explored, both trad and sport, as well as great hikes to natural arches and great overlooks.
We stayed at a big campsite in the forest close to Copperas Creek, less than a mile away from the Red River and parking lot. It's a secluded place to camp, ideal if you want to avoid crowds. And there is a small trail that brings you from the campsite to Snow Arch, a small but pretty arch on top of a ridge line with great views of the forest.
The most popular option to camp among climbers is at Miguel's, a great place best known for its tasteful pizzas, cheap camping and climbing crowds.
Since we were staying in the area for 4 days, we decided to explore the trails, overlooks and climbing crags we liked the most of our 'research' in the internet. Those were:
1. Indian Staircase Hike
Indian Staircase is a very beautiful hike for those who like strong emotions and beautiful landscapes. This 5-mile loop hike is a must do in the Red River Gorge. But the hike has a rock scramble section that can be potentially dangerous, so only experienced hikers and rock climbers should attempt this hike.
2. Grey's Arch Hike
Grey's Arch is a big and spectacular arch in Red River Gorge.
3. Chimney Top Rock Overlook
Chimney Top Rock is a great overlook located just 0.3 miles from the parking area and trailhead. You will have a spectacular view of Half Moon Arch and the Red River Gorge.
4. Rock climbing
Rock climbing in the sandstone walls of the Red River Gorge during autumn is a wonderful experience.
What we did last weekend? Had fun in nature!
